Simply online with a host or a registrar. What is the difference between both?
• A web host is a company that hosts websites. Generally, the host includes in its offer the registration of the domain name.
• A registrar is a company specializing in the management of domain names. It has different accreditations for this. However, most registrars have now also become hosts.
This is not very important in itself, provided that the domain name is registered in your name.
Indeed, when registering a domain name online, the company must ask you who will be the owner of this domain name, also called registrant or even registrant. This is of paramount importance, as the domain name will legally belong to the designated person or company.
This is also the reason why you must be particularly vigilant at this stage. If you are registering a name for your business, specify the business name, not your last name. And especially not a fake name!
Once the transaction has been completed, the domain name is generally registered within minutes or hours.
You can use a utility called WHOIS. This utility queries the registrar's database and returns the information it finds there. Your name may not appear there if you have chosen an anonymization option so that your details do not appear publicly in the registrar's directory. Public databases also make it possible to find the host of a site by identifying dedicated server in Bangladesh.
The domain name can be managed with the host or the registrar where you registered it. Rest assured, if you are not satisfied with this company, you can transfer your domain name to another host or registrar.
The possibilities in terms of management can vary from one registrar to another, however, it is generally possible for you to act on the two types of possible actions with a domain name:
• Administrative actions: for example renewing the domain name, changing the billing contact, obtaining the authorization code to transfer it, assign it to another person, etc.
• Technical actions: they make it possible to act on the associated name servers, and the DNS zone if it is hosted by the registrar. It's a bit technical, but remember that it is mainly a question of associating the domain name with services (website, messaging ...). The services in question are not necessarily hosted by the host or the registrar which owns the domain name.
Watch out for oversights!
Each domain name has an expiration date. If you forget to renew the domain name on this date, it will be put out of service (and therefore your site and your messaging will stop working) and you could even lose ownership if you do not act quickly.
In principle, your host is supposed to send you an email before the domain name expires, but it is more prudent to note a reminder in your calendar just in case. Some hosts also offer you automatic domain name renewal.
A domain name is above all an element of intellectual property, just like a brand. It is even a distinctive sign, the legal status of which is that of the trade name or sign if it combines its characters.
Domain names can, therefore, give rise to legal conflicts, each party claiming the intellectual property of the disputed name. There are also so-called amicable conflict resolution procedures.
The registration of a domain name is therefore not a trivial act: you must take care not to infringe the rights of a third party under penalty of losing ownership.
